Biography:
After graduation from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń in 1978, Judge Hofmański started his academic career as an assistant in the Chair of the Criminal Procedure Law at this University. After completing PhD studies in Toruń (1981), he started as adjunct at the Chair of Criminal Procedure Law at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Judge Hofmański completed his second degree (habilitation) in 1989 and was appointed Professor at the Chair of Criminal Law of the University of Białystok. From 2000 to 2015, he was a Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where he ran the Chair of Criminal Procedure Law. He started his judicial career in 1994 as a judge of the Appellate Court in Białystok and was thereafter appointed a Judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Polish Supreme Court in 1996. Judge Hofmański was involved in a number of projects carried out by the Council of Europe.
Judge Hofmański was a Judge at the International Criminal Court from March 2015 until March 2024, where he served as Presiding Judge of the Appeals Chamber and as President of the International Criminal Court from 2021 to 2024. Judge Hofmański is currently a Director of the newly created Center of International Criminal Justice at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
Judge Hofmański is an author of more than 300 books, commentaries, articles on constitutional law, criminal law, criminal procedure, international cooperation in criminal matters and human rights protection.
