In its latest decision on victims’ procedural rights during trial, made public on 6 March 2023, the Trial Panel in the Shala case decided, inter alia, to vary the deadline for the submission of victim applications for participation in the proceedings until the closing of the SPO’s case. The Panel considered such a decision appropriate, pursuant to Rule 9(5) of the Rules, due to circumstances of the case and the overall security situation in Kosovo. As it can be seen on the case page, the total number of participating victims in this case is currently 8.

On 27 February 2023, Specialist Prosecutor’s Office submitted a public lesser redacted version of the amended indictment in the case of Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi and Selimi. This latest version of the indictment is available in English here. More information about this case, including the indictment history is available on the case page. 

In its decision on the conduct of the proceedings in the Shala trial, Trial Panel I, inter alia, allocated 53.5 hours to the SPO to present its case, during which the SPO intends to call 19 witnesses. The Defence will be given the same amount of time to cross-examine an SPO witness as effectively used by the SPO for its direct examination of that witness. The Victims’ Counsel shall be allocated 25 per cent of the time effectively used by the SPO. Finally, the Panel set 19 May and 16 June as additional hearing dates and cancelled 30 June as a hearing day. More details in the actual order.

Shala Defence completed its opening statement, followed by an unsworn statement of the accused, pursuant to Rule 142(1) of the Rules. The hearing is adjourned for today and the trial will resume on 27 March at 09:30 with the commencement of the evidence presentation.
