Here is the transcript of today's KSC Weekly Press Briefing.

On 16 October 2024, the Supreme Court Panel rejected Haxhi Shala's request for reconsideration of its earlier decision, in which the Panel dismissed Shala’s request for protection of legality concerning his detention. The same panel, comprising Judges Ekaterina Trendafilova (Presiding), Christine van den Wyngaert, and Daniel Fransen, concluded that Shala did not demonstrate any errors in the reasoning of the earlier decision, nor that its reconsideration is necessary to avoid injustice to the accused.

Another KSC weekly press briefing will take place on Thursday, 17 October, at 14:30. During this briefing, the KSC Spokespersons will provide a short update on the latest developments in the judicial proceedings before the KSC, as well as on other public activities of the Court. As previously announced, Pjetër Shala Defence submitted its notice of appeal against the trial judgment confidentially on 2 September this year. The redacted public version of this notice is now accessible in our Public Court Records. In the meantime, the Defence submitted its revised notice of appeal, and the public redacted version was filed on 4 October.

Due to compelling humanitarian grounds, the Trial Panel has instructed the Registry to manage a custodial visit to Kosovo for Haxhi Shala to meet immediate family. The accused remains in detention and in the custody of the Specialist Chambers. EULEX and Kosovo Police are supporting the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.

During today’s trial preparation conference in the Januzi et al. case, the Panel issued a number of oral orders, all of which are based on the anticipated commencement date of the trial, envisaged for 8 November 2024. Among other matters, the Panel addressed the unavailability of Januzi’s lead counsel on 11 and 12 November. The Panel decided that, if necessary, Januzi can be represented by his co-counsel during this period. The Panel also ordered the Defence teams to file their list of witnesses by 4 November 2024. Lastly, the Panel announced that it will issue a number of relevant decisions in due course, including the one on the date for the start of the trial.

This was the last trial preparation conference in this case, so the hearings for the rest of this week are cancelled.
